Long, long ago, Jack was a uneventful farm pony, but the products of the earth were no longer enough to make a proper living for his family. So he decided to go to the city to find work and make lots of money. It did not happen. Chaining mediocre jobs, Jack barely earned enough to live himself. He decided to eat only every 2 days. Then to give back his room and live in the woods, to save as much as possible.
The fatal blow was when he received a letter from his sister telling him that his father died due to a long illness. Discouraged, he plunged into alcohol and began to rob the other ponies in order to earn more money and in a faster way, to help his family.

One evening in a tavern, Jack, drunkard and stingy, shoved the Devil, Hell Gate.
He, as usual, tries to convince Jack to give him his soul in exchange for diabolical favors...
About to succumb, Jack asks the devil to give him a drink before he accepts the pact. The Devil agreed, without perceiving that Jack had slipped into his drink a powerful sleeping pill he kept on him in order to rob his victims. Once the devil fell asleep, Jack left the tavern quickly, disappearing into the night.
A year later, Jack met the Devil on a country road: Hell Gate wanted his revenge and a payback.
Jack, thinking at full speed then said, "I'll come, but first could you help me pick apples from this tree for me and take them to my poor mother?". The Devil agreed climbed the branches of the apple tree, starting to pick the apples and why not, munch in one or two simultaneously. Jack then pulled out his knife and carved a cross on the tree ... the devil was stuck. The crafty Jack then obtained the promise that Hell Gate would never take his soul ... No other solution, the Devil agreed and Jack clears the crossed trunk.

A few years later, Jack dies, killed by villagers after he tried to steal food. He couldn't enter paradise because of his life of drunkenness and mischief. In desperation, he went to the Devil. At the gates of hell, he reminds him that he can't take his soul ... "But where will I go? Jack asked." Go back where you came from "replied the Devil.
It was dark, cold and a strong wind was blowing. Jack asked the Devil if he had nothing to enlighten him on the road. In a gesture of kindness, the devil gave him an ember. Jack put it in a turnip he was eating to protect it from the cold wind. Since then Jack is condemned to wander like a lost soul in the darkness, gradually taking the form of the tree where he once trapped the Devil ...
